as we prepare to enter the year of the snake, i thought it would be appropriate to revisit some of what are not just my favorite snake images of all time, but also just one of my favorite photographic series in general. serpens is the study by french photographer guido mocafico that highlights the gorgeous colors, textures, and shapes found in our controversial reptilian friends. i have never been one of those people that completely loves or hates snakes. however, while i truly appreciate their immense beauty and strength, i don't necessarily need them to be anywhere close to me either. so thank you guido, for letting me get up close and personal with these creatures without having to actually get up close and personal. see more of his fabulous work here.
i'm loving these paper-craft bird sculptures by colombian artist diana beltran herrera, who clearly has a way with detail and texture (and mad cutting skills). the faces of the birds are so expressive, the color is vibrant and fun, and they are elaborate enough that it feels as though they will come to life at any moment. since the holidays are beginning to permeate my mind, i'm picturing a whole christmas tree filled with ornaments just like these.... see more from diana here.
today i'm loving lydia shirreff, an illustrator and paper artist based in london. i'm really drawn to her vibrant and happy color sense, use of shapes and layering, and attention to detail no matter how small. the collection of tiny 3D objects from her animal, vegetable, mineral exhibition is so simple and yet so pretty! i wouldn't mind having these lined up on a shelf somewhere. see more from lydia here.
i'm really digging this illustration work by london based illustrator thereza rowe, whose color, quirky characters, and use of collage makes her work jump off the page (or screen). her shapes are clean, but the compositions keep things interesting, and the stories that her illustrations tell are quite weird but in the friendliest way. i especially love her piece above of the two people dancing - i feel like i can hear the tunes they're dancing to! see more of her work here.
how charming are these custom coats of arms by new york based illustrator happy menocal? i love how her quirky and whimsical hand loosens up something that can tend to be traditional and stuffy, and they'd be perfect to kick off a wedding or a new family. i'll have to dream up what mine would be! see more of her lovely work here.
aside from the fact that i have already been in love with john derian, the master of decoupage, for a long while, the addition of his "shadow puppets" plates has made me very happy. i love the play between the delicate shapes of the hands and the slightly menacing shadows they create. the series would look great on the wall in a kid's room! explore more of the magical world of john derian here.
