The warmer weather is making me crave a windows-down road trip in the country, and I think the perfect destination would be this installation by artist Autumn de Wilde called Lighting, Layers, and Reflections. Surprisingly (and somewhat randomly), the installation was designed as a backdrop for a new Cadillac Escalade advertisement, but hey, I'll take it. The combination of the vibrant color, soft sunny light, and the dusty California landscape is truly beautiful. Now I just need to find out if it's still standing, and if so, where I can find it! Cats. Plants. Put the two together. I don't know why Chicago-based artist Stephen Eichhorn decided to collage felines with flora, but quite frankly I don't need any reason to enjoy these amazing portraits. They are ridiculous and delightful! Check out more from him here.
when i was in texas last month visiting my friend kristen, we made a point to go to the nearby petroleum museum (i know, how could one resist?) to see their vast and impressive mineral collection. i think i took about a hundred photos, but i pulled my favorite detail shots to share here with you. enjoy!

as we prepare to enter the year of the snake, i thought it would be appropriate to revisit some of what are not just my favorite snake images of all time, but also just one of my favorite photographic series in general. serpens is the study by french photographer guido mocafico that highlights the gorgeous colors, textures, and shapes found in our controversial reptilian friends. i have never been one of those people that completely loves or hates snakes. however, while i truly appreciate their immense beauty and strength, i don't necessarily need them to be anywhere close to me either. so thank you guido, for letting me get up close and personal with these creatures without having to actually get up close and personal. see more of his fabulous work here.
seoul based photographer lee jung is just my type, and her project aporia is both visually striking and incredibly moving. in greek, aporia means "coming to a dead end," or "impassable," which i think is a fitting title for the project. she uses traditional neon signs to create phrases that speak about love and longing, but places them in quiet, isolated places, as if to send a meaningful message that nobody is there to receive. i find them to be both beautiful and lonely at the same time. see more from lee here.
these aren't necessarily new, but that's not stopping me from loving this photo series persistent pyramids by russian designer anatoly zenkov. he takes traditional landscape images and crystallizes them so that the light, texture, and movement in the environments take on a life of their own. learn more about anatoly here.
well these scarves are awfully pretty. normally i'm a magpie for color, but every now and then i love the simplicity of black and white, especially if it involves beautiful landscape photography and something soft. these "light as a feather" digitally-printed silk scarves by toronto company fieldguided create a lovely abstract pattern when draped and would make a perfect accessory for any outfit - or a wall hanging! see more from fieldguided here.
oh man, this made me laugh out loud. thank goodness for these photos from a 1942 life magazine, otherwise how would we know how to kiss properly?! and to think i've been awkwardly cradling people's heads this whole time.
these otherworldly images are the work of italian artist alberto seveso, and his project a due colori is a beautiful study in color and form. he takes high speed photos of ink mixing with water and the results are soft, ethereal creations that seem to take on a life of their own. i love how they almost seem to read as knotted up bundles of dip-dyed fabric! see more of his work here.
at the moment i'm swooning over these gorgeous images by mark laita, a detroit-born photographer who has been at work for nearly three decades. no matter his subject, from snakes to sea creatures to birds or flowers, he seems to perfectly capture the inherent beauty and complexity that nature offers up to us. i honestly can't decide which group i like best, so i'm including a few of my favorites from the amaranthine collection, "a study of the rare concurrence of beauty and death found in ornithological specimens." and it's not just because i'm a bird myself. see more of his incredible work here.
